    Default Future in the past

    Dear teachers,

Would you please tell me which tense is correct here and which time expression fits in this context ?

For the first time, Julie (1) started / was starting to wonder if she (2) was ready for marriage [how would you explain the use of the simple past of the indicative here after "if"].
Everything in Julie's life had been going well until her world fell apart just a month before. A large company (3)
offered / had offered David an important position that would require him to move to France (4) two months later [which time expression can be added here ?].
Was Julie ready to move halfway across the world, leaving behind her friends and family? If the answer (5) was no [same question as in #2], was she ready to say goodbye to the only man she had ever loved?

    All the best
    Hela

She wonders, "Am I ready for marriage?"
She wondered if/whether she was ready for marriage.

    Hello 5jj,

In #1, can I use both forms in this sentence? i.e. started / was starting to wonder? Same for "offered / had offered" in #3.
Would you mind telling me what is the best time expression to use in #4?

    Gratefully yours
