    The first time we went it was work

    We've been to Australia a few times. The first time we went it was work, then the next time we went it was a mix of work and holiday.(Cambridge English Grammar Today)

    If I separte the above sentence into two parts, which of the following sentences is correct?

    1. The first time we went it was work
    2. The first time we went it was work
