    possessive adjective

Please refer to the following sentence.

Japan is well known for its electronic products.

Studying several example sentences including the phrase 'be well known(or famous) for', I have noticed that in most cases the phrase is followed, for example, The country is famous for its long history, by 'possessive adjective'.
My question is 1) it should be understood in term of collocation.
    2) it is ok omitting 'its'.
or 3) it can be substituted with 'the', but either should be used.

    Thank you.

    Re: possessive adjective

Yes, you can omit "its" in this sentence.
    No, you can't substitute "the."

    Re: possessive adjective

    Thank you SoothingDave.

As a passionate English learner, I'd like to ask you to explain in detail.
You said I can omit 'its'. And so, I want to know whether this could be applied to other sentences in general.
What about this sentence - this restaurant is well know for (its) exotic atmosphere.

    Thank you.
