One of the biggest nightmares that parents face these days is when their kids transform into teenagers. In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, both Romeo and Juliet are teenagers. They make harsh decisions that sadly lead to their death. In order for students and teachers to prevent self harm, which is caused by bullying a lot, and to teach teens that doing drugs is bad, it is important to understand the reasons why people do them, also to know how to help the student or person. It is around the age 12-19 when teens begin to think that they have the right to make their own decisions without their parents concern, and that is when they end up with major problems, and don't really get to enjoy their teenage years. Some teens may do drugs because they think that will help resolve their problems, and others may think or actually commit suicide.
It is in the teenage years where teens tend to be a rebel and are in no position to accept limitations. Many teenagers may start thinking that doing drugs will make them look “cool” or have “swag”. One reason mostly heard from teenagers using drugs is that they do them to feel good, help them get relaxed, or forget the problems they have at home or those at school, if they are dealing with bullying. But they don’t realise that drugs will bring more problems to their lives. People do drugs and self harm to change the way they feel. Often they want to change their situation. If they're depressed, they want to become happy. If they are stressed or nervous, they want to relax, and so on. They do drugs to try it out, for peer pressure, or maybe because they have already tried it and they like it. If sometimes a teen wants to fit in with a group of people who smoke pot or do other drugs, they take the risk to become addicted, just to fit in or to be accepted in the group.
In the play, Romeo and Juliet, Juliet drinks a poison that makes her look dead so she can avoid marriage. When Romeo sees her, he takes poison and dies. Shortly after that, Juliet wakes up and sees he’s drank poison, so she feels like life has no more meaning so she commits suicide by stabbing herself and dies. Many teens these days have problems at home, or experience bullying at school, so they feel depressed and think that life has no purpose, and try to resolve their problems by committing suicide or doing self harm by cutting their wrists or other parts of their bodies. They don't realize how many people really do love them. They don't feel loved. They don't realize how much it will hurt everyone regardless of what they think. There are many reasons why teens commit suicide. It is the after effects of suicide the ones that matter, losing a loved one. If a teen is experiencing bullying at school, it is really important that he or she tells someone and to know there is people who can help and that they don't have to deal with their problems alone. But if a friend of yours is about to commit suicide, don’t leave their side, stay with them and make sure to call an adult or 911.
Statistics show that by the 8th grade, 29.5% of teenagers have consumed alcohol, 15.5% have smoked cigarettes, and 15% have used marijuana. That is a lot of teenagers who probably don’t know or haven’t thought about the risks of doing drugs. Statistics also show that suicide among people 15-24 is the third leading cause of death. It’s known that more males commit suicide than females. That is because males tend to use use firearms or other more harmful ways to commit suicide than females who most of the time use pills and they only accomplish to end up in the hospital. Males succeed at suicide more than females.
Some of the best ways to help a teen with drug abuse and suicidal thoughts, is to not tell them they are stupid, but to help them and encourage them to go talk to a counselor. To convince them to think that what they are doing is wrong, and that even though they feel like things are just not going to get better that way, that they are not, they will only complicate them more. It is really important to let them know that you understand the reasons for why they make those decisions. Also to inform them about the major and even minor effects that they will suffer from drugs or self harm.
