These enterprises occupy a unique position in most of the countries especially in a developing country. The role of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to economic development of a country is well organized. Across the globe it is strongly perceived that SMEs do play vital role in the industrial development, as well as economic development of a country. [/FONT] [FONT="]Bangladesh is an agricultural country. 85% populations of Bangladesh are Farmer. So agricultural gets the priority all times. But today people are becoming aware of industry. In this circumstance SMEs have great opportunity in this country. Environment, cheap labor, business strategy etc are the key factors for the development of SMEs in Bangladesh.[/FONT] [FONT="]The Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) have been playing an important role for the development of Bangladesh. They are a primary target for many countries desiring to stimulate economic growth and development through SMEs. The SMEs sub-sector plays an increasingly dominant role in the technology assimilation and dissemination and in economic development in Bangladesh as well. The emphasis being put on the SMEs has increased greatly now that the time is coming nearer that Bangladesh will have to document its status of implementing actions to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) such as eradication of extreme poverty, sustainable industrial development, increase of GDP, agricultural development and developing a global partnership for business competitiveness etc. [/FONT] [FONT="]SMEs provide low cost employment opportunities and render more flexibility compared to large enterprises to the economy of Bangladesh. Many of the SMEs are engaged in export activities suggesting that they are internationally competitive. Considering the importance of SME sector in the economy of Bangladesh and understanding the constraints under which such enterprises operate, it is evident that policies to support the development and growth of SMEs are necessary. In the policy strategies, smooth and sustainable development of SMEs all over the country will be considered as one of the vehicles for poverty alleviation, and generation of more employment. An attempt has been made in this book to identify major constraints including financial constraints being faced by SMEs in Bangladesh and make some recommendation as well as suggest some policy measures to overcome those constraints.
