    Please would you take a look at these sentences and correct them.

    1.He was thinking that the village would have been an idyll, if it had not been for the war.
    2. He would still be working, were it not for illness.

    I prefer

    1. He was thinking that the village would have been idyllic, had it not been for the war.

    2. is OK.
