Default animals lie hidden / hiding

    Hello, everyone.

"In winter, a lot of animals lie hidden in their holes."
Is this a natural(correct) English sentence?

I think it should be "In winter, a lot of animals lie hiding in their holes."

I'm not confident, so please help me to solve this problem.
    Thank you.

    1. yes it is natural/correct English

2 if you like to use hiding you need additional "in" in the sentence making it three in total:
"In winter, a lot of animals lie in hiding in their holes."
    It wouldn't sound natural.
Anyway stay/lie in hiding would be used in reference to people not to animals.

Either would be OK. In the animal kingdom, prey lie hidden; predators often lie in hiding (purposeful).
