Default Different from most (of the girls) I know?

    Hello everyone:

    Hello everyone:
Is it correct to say that “you are different from most girls I know” refers to a mass of girls whereas “you are different from most of the girls I know” refers to a very limited number of girls”

    as in:

Most doctors make a lot of money.

Most of the doctors don't make half as much as a civil engineer.

    Thanks

In both cases, the choice is optional.

Then what about the difference between " most of " and "most" in the following examples:

    a. Most doctors make a lot of money.

b.Most of the doctors don't make half as much as a civil engineer.

    Thanks

No differrence, unless a specific group of doctors had been discussed prior to the statement. In that case, a. would be speaking about doctors in general and b. would be talking about a specifically indentified group of doctors.

Sorry I forgot to insert "I know" in (b)

(b)Most of the doctors I know don't make half as much as a civil engineer.

    (A) is a general statement about all doctors
    (B) refers to a specific group of doctors

High on grammar, instead of sending your thanks in a separate message and quoting our replies back to us, just click the Like button, please.

The reason is that it is flagged as a new post, so we think you might have a follow-up question or something to add. Those of us with slow internet connections and/or old computers have to waste valuable time waiting for it to appear.

    Thank you.
