Might anybody check it as soon as possible? I'm going to take the TOEFL tomorrow. The reading passage is about a colony that used to live on Roanoke Island in the 16th century. While his leader was away, they desappared but nobody knows why and where did they gone.
According to the theory presented in the reading passage, they moved to a different island. It is believed this because, when the leader came back, he found the word "Croatan" carved onto a fence post and "Croatan" is the name of an island in the neighborhood of the Roanoke Island.
In the listening passage, the professor, said that the theory presented in the reading passage is not the most credible theory. He also provided 3 reasons in order to cast doubt on the theory expressed in the reading passage.
First of all, he said that lots of people have tried for ages to find a proof demostring the presence of the colonist on the Croatan Island. However, not a single proof has been found.
Second, Croatan is not only the name of an island. Lots of places are called Croatan. Thus, the word has may different meaning and it's incorrect to think only about the Croatan Island.
Third, a singular colony was found in the 18th century. They were called "Croatan" and they used to speak English properly. Moreover, they had blue eyes and some of them had blond hair. According to this theory, this colony is the same colony they has been lost in the 16th century.
In conclusion, the professor said that this theory, the third one, is one of the most credible one istead of the theory presented in the reading passage which is not a really good one.
