Why not Google "whether" and see what comes up? If you then have questions, you can ask us.

I had looked several threads in google about my question, but I carry on have a some problems. The most important problem that I cannot translate any sentence with "whether" I do not why. My dictionary ABBYY Lingvo says a signification, but I'm confused. Okay, I will try write a sentence with "whether" :

1) "I have asked my sister whether I could take her iPad, or not. " = "I have asked my sister: "Could I take your iPad?" ", Is it correctly?

OK. Good start. The word "whether" implies a choice between two options -- "whether" (yes) or "not" (no). Sometimes the "or not" can be omitted.

Look at the underlined part, "I have asked my sister whether I could take her iPad or not". You are asking if you (1) can take the iPad (she will let you use it), or, (2) cannot take the iPad (she will not let you use it).

"I don't know whether it will be a warm day or not".
1. It may be a warm day.
2. I may be a cold day.

"I don't know whether the car is blue or red".
1. The car may be blue.
2. The car may be red.

Note that, "or not" is not always used with "whether". In the case of the cars, the color is either one or the other. When you use, "whether" you have to have more than one possible outcome.

"I don't know whether she likes fish or oysters" - two possible answers
"I don't know whether she likes fish or not" - again, two possible answers since "or not" is a possibility.

Whether you want to or not, write three sentences using "whether" and post them here. Whether I am here or on vacation, someone will assist you.
