Default Questions for Students and Teachers

Whats the biggest problem that you or your students have with the passive form?

I am a new teacher and I have to teach a lesson on passive tomorrow and I am trying to find any potential problems so I can resolve them quickly.

I guess that depends on the nationality of your students. I teach Germans, and the German passive voice is very similar to the English passive voice. I can imagine, though, that Russians might have a harder time with it.

In malaysia, we normally use passive when we emphasize something. for an example. James cleans the room. in passive " The room is cleaned by james"

    good luck teacher~!

That is the use of passive, but what I am really looking for is problems that you have experienced while learning passive/active though I can't see my class having problems. I am really looking to fix their problems before they occur.

Students might ask the following questions about the passive voice:

[1] When do you use the present form of the passive?; e.g., Max is taken care of.

[2] Why is it that not every transitive verb has a passive form?

[3] What's the difference between "Max was seen doing it" and "Max had been seen doing it"? And, are they both passive voice?

[4] In some cases, adding a "by"-phrase renders a passive sentence semantically awkward; i.e., ungrammatical. Why? ;)

    All the best.
