    Smile is or are?

    Hi to my beloved teachers,
I've come across this sentence in the journal. I was wondering why the author used is instead of are.

"The presence of epidemic and nosocomial strains of selected E. faecium and E. faecalis as well as high rates of resistance to multiple antibiotics amongst E. faecium isolates is of a particular concern"

    Thanking you in advance.

The subject is "presence", as singular noun.
