    how to annotate a text

Can you help me to express the following directions more naturally in spokenEnglish?

    (Teacher to students)

In the last class, we talked about how to annotate a text. Today, as your homework, i want you to read a text titled ' American dream" and write your annotation on the text itself.

See my suggestions above. Note that I have said "... read this text ...". I assume you will have a copy of the text in your hand when you give your instruction and you can show it to your students before giving them each their own copy of the text.
Remember - correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing make posts much easier to read.
