    Loosing VS Lost

    Hello!

How does one explain that 'was loosing' is correct and 'lost' would be wrong in the following sentence:

'My biggest regret in life was loosing that opportunity'.

    Cheers,
    Tito

The word you are looking for is "losing". It is the present participle of the verb "to lose". "Lost" is the past tense and past participle of "to lose". It is also an adjective.

In your sentence, "losing" is a gerund (noun derived from a verb) that introduces a gerund phrase which acts as the complement of the verb "was". Biggest regret = losing that possibility. The word lost cannot perform that function.
