    A green drop down box - which preposition is right?

    A green drop down box will appear at the top of the screen or
    A green drop down box will appear on top of the screen

    They could both be correct. If the box appears on the upper part of the screen, it's "at the top".
    If the box appears in front of the content on screen, obscuring the content (like far too much advertising does), it appears "on top of the screen".

    Generally, 'on top of' is more intrusive - as in 'The cat sat right on top of the keyboard'.
