Default The rivers but not the mountains?

In the usingenglish quiz, it says that rivers can come with definite article "the" but not for mountains. Why is it so?

    Even for Hotels and Churches.

Where are you seeing this? It is common to refer to "the Rockies" or "the Appalachians."

I see. Individual mountains do not take an article, but mountain ranges do.

These are matters of usage mostly. You won't find a logical explanation for why we can have "the Mississippi," but not "the Mt. Rainier."
