    The use of 'should'

    Hello,

What is the function of 'should' in these two sentences?

I am very glad that she should want to go out and amuse herself.
After all it was very natural that he should like to play about with Roger.
I should hate to see you let down now.
    (From Somerset Maugham's Theatre)

    Thanks

    Re: The use of 'should'

The first and third are future conditionals. I think Maugham's usage in the second sentence is old-fashioned. Most people today would just say "... natural that he liked to play...".

I don't think these are future conditionals. In each case, should could be replaced with would.

They are really a form of subjuctive.
