    Is this sentence grammatically correct?

I found this in a newspaper. "The couple was great friends". Is this sentence grammatically correct?

No. Which newspaper did you find it in?

Note that a better title would have been 'The couple was great friends'.

Even though "couple" is a singular noun, it is clear in this use that it refers to two people. Therefore, a plural verb is a better choice.
