Dear all,
I have a figure showing two frequency distributions, one is for lakes, another is for reservoirs. Now I want to add some descriptive information for this figure.
1. Fig. 2 shows the two cumulative frequencies of numbers of lakes and reservoirs.

or

2. Fig. 2 shows the two cumulative frequencies of number of lakes and reservoirs.

Can anybody kindly tell me which one is correct?

When I thought about this, I was thinking "the number of" sounded like the best fit, but I couldn't quite make up my mind. A Google search of four possibilities showed the top result being "cumulative frequencies of the number of..." (the four possibilities were your two suggestions, and your two suggestions plus "the".) Hopefully somebody else can shed some better light on this.

I'd go with "the number of".

You probably should leave out "two" if one frequency graph is for lakes and the other for rivers. If both are for lakes and reservoirs, then it's probably OK.
I agree with "the number of".
