1. The congregation received some heartening words from their pastor

2. Our coach gave a heartened speech that made us confident we would win the game


"heartened" in the second sentence is correct or incorrect. Is it true if i use heartening as the first sentence. Thank you !

I would go with "heartening" in both.

Heartened and heartening both the sentences are correct.
No, they are not. Only 'heartening' is appropriate. In #1, the congregation were heartened, and in #2, we were.
