Hi. I have some questions about different types of friends and names we have for them in English. For instance I know one word: fair-weather friend. Can you help me find more words which define different types of friends? Do you know a better word instead of fair-weather friend? Thank you.

A "fair-weather friend" is more of an idiom describing someone who is not actually a friend. For types of friends in English, you use a basic adjective to modify the noun: "[adjective] + friend".
A "good" friend
A "close" friend
A "best" friend
An "old" friend (old referring to time and not age)

And then there's a variety of words to call friends: mate, pal, chum, etc.

Thank you. I think I should have explained more. I would like to know some idioms describing different types of friends.
