Use of simple past and past perfect

While I was writing a paragraph, the doubt relating to simple past and past perfect sprang to mind.

the line in which i have doubt is-

"Paper 2 was easy, so it went well.I wish paper 1 had been easier, then I could have done better in that too."

(in the former case I have used "was"(simple past) because it has happened recently,in the latter case i have used "had been"(past perfect) because i took the exam the other day)

are my usages of these two tenses are correct here?

Re: Use of simple past and past perfect

You have used the tenses perfectly.

Sometimes we do not use the past perfect when grammar books suggest we should. However, in your second sentence, the past perfect is essential to express a regret for a past situation that did not happen. The past simple in the first sentence is also correct - the paper was easy.
