Hello all, I've just started offering private English lessons. I'd like to institute a fair cancellation policy but can use some guidance. Currently my students pay for each lesson at a time, so it may be difficult to collect in the event of a "late cancel," but I am willing to try charging in advance instead. Thanks for any help!

Give them an incentive to pay in advance; a small discount always does the trick. I used to have my students (face-to-face) pay for the entire month, which made me feel relaxed about cancellations. Then, write up a very clear policy that states exactly what happens in certain circumstances and stick to it.

Paying a month in advance also reduces the amount of time spent on money and makes for 'cleaner' lessons IMO.

Be fair. If they have to pay for a lesson cancelled with less than x hours' notice, you should offer them a free lesson if you have to cancel at such short notice.
