    To make them different

    hinder, hamper
    prevention, hindrance

There is a reason for the existence of every one word...

    Your say?

    Re: To make them different

They were borrowed into English from three different languages: French, Germanic, and Latin.

hamper (verb) - from French "to impede."

hinder (verb) - from Germanic "to put or keep back."
    hinderance (noun)

prevent (verb) - from Latin "come before, anticipate to hinder"
    prevention (noun)

    :D

Hi, nice to see you again!

Yeah, now that you have informed me with their origin, could you
discuss the differences between each group?

Thanks, and looking forward to your new post. :P

It is a matter of usage. There is a pretty good explanation here: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=hinder The difference between prevent and the others is that the others put obstacles in one's path, while if you prevent somebody from doing something you keep him from doing it altogether.
