    two women were not

    1-Two women were not working on the project. Five were.

    Can't this mean two different things:
    a-It is not true that two women were working on the project. Five women were working on it.
    (I think in this case "1" could be said in reply to "Two women were working on the project.")

    b-There were seven women in all. Two were not working on the project and five were.

    For 1, I'd rather say something like "There were not two women working on the project. There were five!"
