Hello all,

I am translating an advertisement to promote bananas as a healthy snack to children and teenagers.
Could I say something like:
Why not go bananas today ?
Or is the idiom so linked up with going crazy that the literal reference to the bananas is completely lost ?

The ad wants to convince the teenagers that bananas will not make them fat.
Do teenagers talk about 'getting fat', or is there a better way to put this ?

It's all about being subtle ...

Greetings,
Hilde

It could work- it's simple enough to have the idiomatic meaning and the idea of eating the fruit.

If the target demographic is young people I think it is an excellent idea. The association with going crazy is a strong grabber.

Teenagers certainly worry about getting fat. In the UK, I don't think there's an issue with them thinking that bananas make them fat. Usually, they think (wrongly) that potatoes, bread and chocolate make them fat.

Yes, while I like the "go bananas" part, most people don't think of bananas as a particularly fattening food.

Wrongly? I'd have thought these things could certainly make you fat, depending on quantity, frequency and method of preparation!

Bananas are delicious and fairly nutritious, but unfortunately can also be rather calorific.
