ESSAY QUESTION: WHAT IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL, AS DEPICTED IN "THE ROCKING-HORSE WINNER"?

According to the book, “The Rocking Horse Winner” written by D. H. Lawrence the root of evil is delineated as the human mind itself along with its varied emotions. It is the different human feelings like greed, anxiety and selfishness that bring about evil ideas in our lives and in the world. Without directions from our mind nothing can be carried out good or evil.

One of the major contributors to evilness is the feeling of greed. At the start of the book, Paul hears whispers all over the house that “There must be more money!” (221). As time passes, Paul decides to put an end to the voices his family hears so he thus decides to make money. Later Paul earns money and hands Uncle Oscar five thousand pounds and asks him to deposit it with the family lawyer so that his mother can get a gift of a thousand pounds for each of her birthdays for the next five years, hoping that this action of his might end the voices he hears. But as we all know there is no end to greed, neither did his mother get satisfied with the amount she’d obtain every year as she wanted all the money at once and nor did the voices at home come to an end. In fact, the voices only increased their volume and frequency as Paul still heard voices saying, “ There must be more money! Oh-h-h; there must be more money. Oh, now, now-w! Now-w-w --- there must be more money! --- more than ever! More than ever!” (230). These voices represent how at first Paul started making money to try to confine the voices he heard but later when he made some money, the voices became louder because Paul and his family had become greedier than before.

Moreover, anxiety also plays a major role in leading to evilness. In this book, Paul and his family always valued to hold up a high social position because they felt that they spent an anxious life due to the lack of money. Paul’s parents made enough money to support their family but they wanted more money to become an influential part of the society. They never let anyone outside find out that they were in a financial crisis but inside the house they always felt a strange kind of uneasiness of not having enough money. The writer describes their situation by writing, “Although they lived in style, they felt always an anxiety in the house. There was never enough money. The mother had a small income, and the father had a small income, but not nearly enough for the social position which they had to keep up” (220).

Furthermore, in the end Paul rides his rocking horse to find out who the winning horse would be just so he could earn more money and get rid of the anxiety they felt in their house but eventually Paul died and his uncle said to his mother, “My God, Hester, you’re eighty-odd thousand to the good and a poor devil of a son to the bad. But, poor devil, poor devil, he’s best gone out of a life where he rides his rocking horse to find a winner” (234). This epitomizes how Paul’s mother’s selfish and incessant need for money has in the end taken Paul’s life.

In conclusion, the only reason why evil exists today is because people always want happiness, which then leads to emotions like greed, anxiety and selfishness. For instance, Mary Wollstonecraft wrote, “No man chooses evil because it is evil; he only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks”. Therefore, we ourselves are the decision makers of our life so we should think about whether what we are doing is right or wrong.
