Is "senior citizen homes" same as "nursing home"? Does it have to be always plural?

5) Young volunteers with an interest in arts can share their talents, as individuals or a group. Check with senior centers, daycare programs, or recreation programs. You may offer assistance at an art center or a local art gallery. You can also present musical performances, magic shows, or other forms of entertainment at senior citizen homes, hospitals, or other community facilities. Your contribution will help keep arts alive in your community while it brings enjoyment to others.

In BrE, we don't really use the phrase "senior citizens". I think that's more AmE. We refer to those over retirement age as OAPs, pensioners, the elderly. You might see "seniors" too.

In the UK, there are lots of different terms for communal homes for older people, depending on what services they provide. We have old people's homes, care homes, nursing homes, retirement communities, warden-assisted housing and EMI homes (EMI = Elderly Mentally Infirm).

The plural is always used when talking generically but if you are talking about a specific one, then it would be a nursing home.

In the USA, we also have a variety of situations that fall under the umbrella of senior citizen homes. Some provide nursing and medical care (nursing homes). Some provide only rent-subsidized apartments. Others provide meals and transportation for shopping, while leaving the occupant free to manage their own lives (assisted living). There are many others.
