    Smile Agenda x diary

    Dear teachers,

Can I use the word "diary" refering to a small book with a calendar in it where I write down my appointments?
Please tell me what an agenda is exactly and what it is for.

    Many thanks

In English it's called a diary or an appointments diary. An agenda is a diary in French.

Thank you, bhaisahab . I am still in doubt because when people write down their everyday happenings in a book they call that a "diary". It is a little confusing, isn't it?

It's not that confusing really. Originally, people wrote those thoughts in an actual diary - a small book with consecutive dates. However, there is not very much space in most formal diaries so people who want to write pages and pages of entries for each day would not be able to do that in a standard diary. On that basis, they use blank paper but each entry starts with the day and the date so it still looks like a diary. A diary does not have to include only future plans and appointments - it can be written retrospectively.
Remember - correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing make posts much easier to read.

In AmE, we call it an appointment book. An agenda is generally a list of things to be done or items to be considered at a meeting. A diary is a recording of one's experiences and/or observations, which is also sometimes called a journal.
