Hello everybody,

I'm trying to understand some sentences from an interview with Harry Gregg, a former Manchester United goalkeeper.

Some parts are not quite clear to me.

Could anyone please help me out with the extracts in attachments?

Here is what I hear:

1. Eleven players and twenty-two selectors. (...) football.

2. Doncaster Rovers has beaten, and then a short time later at Wembley, was again (...) getting the break.

3. You'll all know Bill Shankly's name, you'll all know Jim (?)'s name, you'll all know the late great (?) Raich Carter.

4. Stronger (...) I was. People like (...) I remember.

5. I was 6,2 ft and 13,5 tall, and I said: "Boss, do I get anything (...)?"

I'm aware there are quite a few mistakes, so can anyone please help me correct them and fill in the gaps?

Anyway, thank you in advance.

1. Eleven players and twenty-two selectors. Typical of football!!
2. Doncaster Rovers beat Bristol Rovers and then, a short time later at Wembley, was again getting the break. (Note this is ungrammatical and I don't know what he meant).
3. You'll all know Bill Shankley's name, you'll all know Jim ????????'s name, you'll all know the late, great arrogant Raich Carter. (Sorry, the middle one is an Irish surname that I can't make out without knowing anything about football!)
4. Stronger willed than I was. People like that, I remember.
5. I'm six foot two and thirteen and a half stone, and I said "Boss, do I get anything out of it?" (Note: Six foot two = height; thirteen and a half stone = weight)

Hello again,

Here are some other extracts:

1. This is the trainer. And I was... We followed the leader, 'cause I was (...) I'm now a bit quiet in their company, I had joined the Hollywood of football.
2. "You've got a cry in your head." You're thinking: "Is it (...) or is he paying me a compliment?"
3. ...singing on all the diplomats - it was the time of communism - singing ("???" name of a song?), at the banquet, there's ... God.
4. And we're sitting in (and?) the (...) start, and we're playing poker but I'm green as grass.
5. They were taking my ten-shilling notes out (...) and putting in Yugoslav dinars, which were bloody worth (...) follow one day.

There it is. I edited this post.

Tank you very much for your new answer, emsr2d2.

And here is the third part:

1. We finished about 4 or 5 o'clock in the morning, and I was (???) They talk about them all. Everyone has an opinion. I was (???)
2. Henry Rose, I'm telling you about. At 4 in the morning, I had to... I didn't have to help... to help him physically. Excuse me.
3. He's sitting there and he's torn, but this time (...) but he's torn with (?) the late, great Johnny Berry. He said: "At every (...) of my foot (...), and they couldn't give me an anaesthetic.
4. Now I'm saying something terribly private. Only Sandy, she knew it (...) She had a lovely girl, Sheila (?). And he said: "They had to set it... they had time."
5. And I'm basically (...) fella. And I'm up... I made up for a sense.

Thank you again for the first part, emsr2d2. It all makes sense to me now.

It would have been a good idea to wait for some replies to your second set of quotes before posting even more of them.

Indeed, you are right. I'm sorry about that. I'll try to be more patient.

None of the attachments in post #4 work - you have used a different format from posts #1 and #5 which are both fine. Please try again with the contents of post #4.

1. "rooming with" both times. It means "sharing a room with".
2. I have no idea what he said. He was either burping or hiccupping through those words.
3. He's sitting there and he's talking about his time in ??????, but this time he's talking about the late great Johnny Berry. He said "I'd every bone in my foot broken and they couldn't give me an anaesthetic".
4. Now I'm saying something terribly private, only Sandy she knew it/enough (???) She'd a lovely girl, Sheena. They had to set it a bone at a time, a day at a time.
5. And I was basically a teetotal fella. And I've made up for it since.

4 is very unclear after "Sandy" and I'm not sure what the Sheena sentence meant, but I'm sure he says Sheena, not Sheila. Sheena is a good Irish name.

1. This is the trainer. And I would be "follow the leader". Cause I wasn't like I am now - I'd be quiet in their company. I'd joined the Hollywood of football.
2. "You've got a cry in your head and you're thinking "Is the fella taking the ... (trails off leaving the word "piss" out) or is he paying me a compliment?"
3. ... singing, and all the diplomats there, at the time of Communism, singing "On Ilkley Moor Baht T'at", at the banquet, as true as God.
4. I have no idea. It sounds like "and we're sitting strippers starred" which makes no sense!
5. They were taking my ten-shilling notes out and I would go ... and putting in Yugoslav dinars which were bloody worthless the following day.

Thank you again, emsr2d2, you're such a good listener.

Needless to say I would never ever have understood On Ilkley Moor Baht T'at.

So here are the next 5 extracts:

1. We were famous, and I say "(...) very proud of that."
2. Because I think, Alex Ferguson, if he was in a bad day, he'd hit me a punch, and he was quicker than anybody
3. I watch goalkeepers, how they make a save, or ball played back to them.
4. And I say, in my day the flowers would've withered on (down?) the grave. Because Nat Lofthouse or (...) would've buried you.
5. We drew to a piece (...) as my first start began (?) at (...) Road.
