    Do/Does the majority of Americans use the colon?

    Do/Does the majority of Americans use the colon?

    I believe it should be "Do". Am I correct?

    Normally, a prepositional phrase following a subject has no effect on verb number. An exception is a subject that is a part of the whole. In that case, the object of the preposition controls verb number.

    Some of the cake was eaten.
    Some of the cakes were eaten.
