    Smile until or by

    Are these sentences correct?

    1) Last Saturday, my mother made a dress until 11 pm.

    2) Last Saturday, my mother was making a dress until 11 pm.

    3) Last Saturday, my mother had made a dress by 11 pm.

Sentences 1) and 2) are supposed to mean that my mother started the activity when she got up and was continously doing it until the stated time.

    Thanks in advance

    Re: until or by

2 and 3 are fine. 1 is wrong: the continuous form is required, as in 2.

Thank you very much for your helpful answer. Is 1) wrong because we are talking about a single completed action?
What about the verbs like clean, wash and tidy e.g.?

    1) Yesterday, I tidied my room until 3 pm.

    2) Yesterday, I was tidying my room until 3 pm.

    3) yesterday, I had tidied my room by 3 pm.

    Lots of thanks in advance

    Re: until or by

These are all acceptable, but 2 is still preferable to 1. It sounds more natural to me.

    1) suggests to me that at 3pm some tidying remained to be done but you stopped anyway.
