    bow out of something

    Hi!

could you tell me what compliance role in the following words I cited as below:

Hector Sants, the former boss of the Financial Services Authority, had to bow out from his compliance role at Barclays Bank because of stress and exhaustion.
    source: the BBC

    (for more context)

I think I understood the definition of compliance and role, but am confused the phrase. Hector was a boss. His emloyees should have complies to his requests. Why is his poistion is a compliant role at the bank.

    Many thanks!

    Re: bow out of something

His role was to ensure that the bank's procedures and policies complied with legislation, regulation, etc.
