Default Part of speech and grammar question

    1) Peter rushed on foot back along the tracks.

Can someone tell me what is the part of speech of "back" here? Also, when reading the above sentence, should we cut it into "Peter rushed on foot back" and "along the tracks" or "Peter rushed on foot" and "back along the tracks"?

    2) In what situation can we use "in the surface" instead of "on the surface"?

    Many thanks!

    1) 'Back' is an adverb here. You can split the sentence in both ways. It depends how you read it.
    2) It's difficult to think of a context where 'in the surface' makes sense.

I think it's possible where 'the surface' is more than simply the outer part of something.
"No wonder this table is so cheap. There are scratches in the surface."
"The Hubble telescope had to be repaired because of aberrations in the surface of the mirror."
