    surgery/operation

    Hi,
I have some questions. Hope you can help. Thanks!

    1) A severely injured patient is sent to an emergency room and a whole bunch of operations are performed to rescue him.
My question: would there be any phrase or terms more specific for this kind of critical operation? I mean, if the operation fails, the patient will probably die.

    2) If the operation is successful, the patient doesn't die. Then, can I write 'He came through' or 'He made it through'? I would like to emphasie that he struggled and finally survive. Or, do you have more suggestion?

    Many thanks!

    Re: surgery/operation

    Hello Morning

    1. I can't think of any phrases, other than the ones you imply: "critical operation" and "emergency surgery". If you wanted to be melodramatic, you might say "a life-or-death operation".

    2. "He made it through" is fine. "He came through" is usually used in contexts where "he" is an active party; so in the case of surgery, where "he" is a passive party, it might seem a little odd. (But much would depend on the surrounding text.)
