    Default for their understanding?

    Hello, teachers.

    Would you read the following?

Gestures, especially those made with the hands, depend for their understanding on exactly the same thing that spoken words depend on.

Does this "their" refer to "Gestures" in this case?

If not, would you let me know what this "their" refer to?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

    yam.
