Default Take off to do something

Is this locution mostly British English or is it used in American English too? For example:

He took himself off to the dentist.

They took themselves off to the theatre/er.

Let's wait for a speaker of AmE to tell us.

If it's not used in AmE, then it won't be used with "theater".
Remember - correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing make posts much easier to read.
