Some by choices most not by choice

I grew up in multiple places, some by choice and most not by my choice.

I'm trying to tell the listener that some of the places I grew up in weren't decided by me. Please rephrase the above sentence for me so that it's more natural or native.

Re: Some by choices most not by choice

Not many children get to make the choice of where their parents move the family.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

It is usually children who "grow up" and they normally have no choice in where they do it.

I had that in the back of my mind too, but I figured that some people never grow up, so maybe it's true.
