Default Ever since + past simple or present perfect?

Which tense should I use after "ever since" - present perfect or past simple? Here's an example: "Ever since John made/has made friends with Fred his behaviour has taken a turn for the worse".

For me "Ever since John made friends with Fred ..."
Remember - correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing make posts much easier to read.
