I'm confused about these sentences

Hi everyone,
I'm confused about these sentence below,

While Obama and his aides have been quick to dispel the notion this week's trip amounted to a "containment tour," the President's announcements throughout his visit — mostly military in nature — made clear the White House knew Beijing was watching closely.

What does this sentence mean?

"Containment was a United States policy to prevent the spread of communism abroad." (Wikipedia)

Obama and his aides are denying that the above was purpose of the tour. Nevertheless, the remarks he has been making seem to indicate that he was sending a message to China that he would side against them if they tried to spread their power to other countries.

Re-read the two rules of written English I have requoted above. Then look at your post quoted at the top. Have you followed those rules?

I am not a teacher.

Look at definition 2. here.

In your sentence, "wake" is used figuratively. It could be in the wake of someone important or famous, where their entourage would typically be following along behind, or someone causing a physical disturbance, due to size or clumsiness, as they move.

Polyester, your sentence with "hurrying along in his wake" is the last line of the book Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The three characters that are mentioned followed directly after him as he left the station. The trail behind the leader is his "wake".

I capture a part of the sentences as below,
"Uncle Vernon swelled ominously. His sense of outrage seemed to outweigh even his fear of this bunch of oddballs."
Please help me clear my mind of the misunderstand...

" Aunt Petunia whimpered piteously. It could not have been plainer that she was thinking of what the neighbours would say if they caught sight of these people marching up the garden path. "

And then, help me on that above. Thank you!

Polyester, I do not mean to sound unkind, but it seems that Harry Potter may be a bit too advanced for your level of English right now.

Uncle Vernon was afraid of these people, but he was more angry than afraid.
Aunt Petunia was afraid that her neighbors would see these people coming to her house and that her neighbors would think badly of Petunia because she knew them and let them in her house.

It seems Harry Potter is difficult for me. When I read it, I can't imagine the condition of sentences. How can I improve English skills for reading?

Choose easier books. You will be able to read Harry Potter one day!

For example, which books would you recommend to me?

I already answered
Uncle Vernon was afraid of these people, but he was more angry than afraid.

The challenge is that books written in more simple language may be boring for you. But even so, they will help you. Do you have access to a library with a "young adult" section?
