We use the terms near sighted (has trouble seeing things that are far away) and far sighted (has trouble seeing things that are close). Either condition can range from mild to severe.

I am extremely near-sighted. Without my contact lenses in, I am legally blind.

Since I've turned 45, I've become rather far-sighted as well. At first it was mild, but now it is moderate.

I am severely near-sighted. I am moderately far-sighted.

It looks like most of the dictionaries prefer 'farsighted' (or 'longsighted') and 'nearsighted', which is the way I use them, for hypermetropia and myopia respectively - ie. neither 'near sighted' nor 'near-sighted'.
But I haven't checked the statistics.

A quick search of Google and Onelook suggest that all three forms are in use, but the one word form appears to the most common.

"He is mildly/moderately/severely near-sighted/far-sighted."

You have been asked many times to use correct capitalisation in your posts. Please do so.

No. He is nearsighted. He is farsighted.

Hi,
Please note I'm not a teacher nor a native speaker.

Generally you would hear people talking about bad eyesight or poor vision and the only distinction made is the nearsightness (AmE), shortshightness(BrE) or farsightness (AmE), longsightness (BrE). I think only professionals such as opticians or optometrists would discuss it in terms of degree and using appropriate medical terms. Read the wiki page on myopia and hyperopia if you interested.

Cheers.

so can we say "His near sight or far sight is weak"?
No, that is not natural. 'His near vision is poor.' is much better.

Sorry, but I can't let that go. They are dozens of eye conditions that the general public has heard of that cause bad eyesight without near- or far-sightedness: glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, eye injuries, amblyopia, trachoma ... Naturally most people wouldn't know all of those, but if you have it, you'd most likely know about and talk about it.

Hi,
Please note I'm not a teacher nor a native speaker.

Generally you would hear people talking about
bad eyesight or poor vision,[STRIKE] and the only distinction made is[/STRIKE] with two commonly recognised causes being the nearsightness (AmE), shortshightness(BrE) and farsightness (AmE), longsightness (BrE).

Is that version more accurate?

Cheers.
