    is or are

Coming back next week is the couple Mary and John.

Coming back next week is Sally and Peter.

Is the second sentence correct in saying is or should it say are?

What are the rules for using is or are?

    Re: is or are

If "couple" is implied, then "is"; if "couple" is not implied, or cannot be picked up from the context, then "are", like this,

EX: Coming back next week is the couple Sally and Peter. <one unit>
EX: Coming back next week are Sally and Peter. <two separate units>

    All the best.
