Hello, what's the meaning of this sentence: "It is not thought that any examples of this badge were ever manufactured, though the market abounds with post-war fakes."

Is it the badge was never manufactured or manufactured at some point? I'm confused. Thanks.

The badge was not manufactured. That is the conclusion based upon the current evidence.

So the badge was never manufactured but there's a lot of fake version in the market? Correct?

"It is not thought that any examples of this badge were ever manufactured..."

I'm confused.

I am not a teacher.

I'm confused too. If no examples of this badge were ever manufactured does it even exist?

They made the replica version of it.

I would re-write the sentence as:

It was thought that no official duplicates or replicas of this badge were ever made, though the market abounds with post-war fakes.

And the real/original badge was never made too. I just read the book about this matter, apparently they run out of material due to war, so they can't make the badge. After the war, some people read the description of this badge and make the replica of it. That's the whole story.

What makes me confused is, why the writer wrote: "it is not thought", why not "it is thought"? Any explanation? Thanks.

Nobody thinks that any of these were ever made. It is not thought that these were ever made. It is thought that none of these was ever made.

These all say the same thing, more or less.
