Hello
I'd like to better understand the meaning of the sentence:"We were silent in our sadness".
I'm currently translating "The Butterfly Lion" by M. Morpurgo. I don't need/want the translation, of course.
it is about a boy and a girl who must part. They talk a lot, they are in love with each other but their love is unspoken, they know it when their eyes meet etc.
Meaning A
They did not tell each other they were sad (I'd go for it since they meet every Sunday afternoon and talk)
Meaning B
their sadness makes them silent
Which one?
thanks a lot in advance

I'd go with A. As Hemingway might have put it, "We were sad but said nothing."
