    1) The content is...

But what was really to blame in these scandals was the behavior of individual criminals and unethical business people. They were specific human beings. The more we generalize away from those human beings and make it the fault of "the system", the less accountable future individuals need to be.

The red text, does it mean if we conclude that it Zthe scandal) is the fault of the system, not human being (who committed the crime), the future generation will be less responsible?

    2) She blew a hole in the music world with her performance of "Ball and Chain".

Does "blow a hole in the music world" mean something like "grunge rock" do to the music world?

    3) She wasn’t as angry as she was, well, on fire.

What does the above sentence mean?

    4) Her voice grew louder and louder and you could tell that the audience no longer existed for her. ....The kids in the audience jumped to their feet and raised their hands and started screaming, but her voice soared beyond them, above it all, living only for itself as the song came to an end among the loudest sustained cheers of the evening.

What does the red sentences mean?

    5) 1-800-Kevorkian

Anyone knows what it is? Is it a real phone service for miserable people?

    Thank you!

    Cool Re: 1-800-Kevorkian

    1. Yes, you are correct

    2. Blew a hole in etc - means that she was so good at her performance that everyone was really taken aback and thought she was excellent.

    3. She wasn’t as angry as she was, well, on fire - On fire means that you are excelling at something, really fantastic, you are on fire.

    4. the audience no longer existed for her - she wasn't thinking about the audience anymore, all she could think about was her performance, enjoying herself, she was totally engrossed in what she was doing.

    4. but her voice soared beyond them, above it all, living only for itself as the song came to an end - the audience were making a lot of noice, but because she wasn't thinking about them anymore and she was singing at the top of her voice she could only hear herself, again she was totally engrossed in what she was doing.

    5. Can't help, don't know myself.

I believe it is an example of a specific American sense of humour. Kevorkian is/was a doctor known for performing eutanasia to the elder. So the whole phrase means as much as 'here you have the hotline number to dr. Kevorkian, eutanasia at once'.

And I believe an 800 number is a free phone line to the doctor or euthenasia.
