Statement of Purpose
M.Sc in Offshore Technology
I am a Civil Engineer who has always aspired to choose a career which stimulates and holds a natural appeal. Hence, after my bachelors I started my career with Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. My present designation is Offshore Project Engineer in the field of offshore construction where we deal with projects such as Hydrographic Survey, Construction Berths & Jetties and Pile Foundation in my projects. In these projects my responsibility many fold. I primarily co-ordinate with the design team and collect the details of design which are included in the project. Second, Preparation of Tender Drawing, Bill of Quantities, Cost Estimation, Planning, Analysis of Port and Harbour Structures using Staad PRO is also my forte. I also design of various elements using Indian Standard Codes and preparation of reinforcement detailing using Auto CAD, I also prepare the preliminary drawings and documentation work such as Detailed Project Report which includes each and every detail of the project for tendering purpose of the project, Making power point presentation, Carryout overall planning and construction scheduling, Monitoring of total execution of civil works, Site inspection and checking materials, Measurements & conducting test at site. All these experiences enlightened me on the importance and the potential behind Offshore Construction Specialists. Thus, now to hone my skills further I am enthusiastic to do my Masters in Offshore Technology. I sincerely believe that graduation at National University of Singapore, Singapore will be an ideal step in this direction.
My decision to major in Civil Engineering was the result of my desire to contribute something beautiful to the society. The direct impact of Civil Engineering on every individual’s life and importance of infrastructure for development of a country provoked my interest. Coming to the Construction developments going on and the miracles in Civil Engineering Structures that are coming up now-a-days we have to opt for many construction methodologies and how to manage a project construction within the specified timeline assuring Safety, Strength, Economy, Feasibility aspects into consideration by adopting several techniques in the construction process to achieve the goal. In the present world of Civil Engineering there are many varieties of Offshore Construction and planning practices and examples where we can see how easily a project with too many complications can be completed without any complicated procedure and without any life risk. Hence, well trained specialists in the field are the need of the hour.
Coming to my academics I’ve not restricted myself to the conventional method of learning, I augmented my quest for knowledge by working on academic projects like “Replacement of River sand with Ferro (Copper) Slag”. In this project I compared the compressive strength of concrete & to reduce the Environmental problem. I also did a mini project titled “Analysis and Design of Hyperbolic Cooling Tower”. In this project I have done Analyzing and Designing of the Cooling Tower components using “STAAD PRO” software.
I have an avid interest in presenting papers which led me to presenting papers at national level competition like “Aakaar 12” Organized by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) was on the topic of “Recycling and Reuse of Aggregates”, “Technovation 11” Organized by Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore was on the topic of “Disaster Management”, “AICME 11” Organized by Veltech High-tech Engineering College, Chennai was on the topic of “Slurry Infiltrated Fibrous Concrete”, “Technocraz 12” Organized by Sriguru Institute of Technology, Coimbatore was on the topic of “Demolition of Structures using Implosion Technique”, “Resonance” Organized by Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Chennai was on the topic of “Application of Remote Sensing and GIS in Civil Engineering”, “Sai Perlustro 11” Organized by Sairam Engineering College, Chennai was on the topic of “Earthquake Resistant Structures”, “Infraz 12” Organized by Prathyusha Institute of Technology and Management, Chennai was on the topic of “Alternate Energy Sources”, “Wafes 12” Organized by Meenakshi Sundarajan Engineering College, Chennai was on the topic of “Solid Waste Management”, “Sympomkce 12” Organized by M.Kumarasamy College of Engineering, karur was on the topic of “Ground Improvement Technique”, “Mechcraft 12” Organized by AVS Engineering College, Salem presented two paper at same competition was on the topic of “Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Structures” & “Green Building Concept”
I also participated in two seminars on same topic “Construction and Safety Aspects of Nuclear Power Plants” Organized by Sona college of Technology and Sri Krishna College of Technology, Coimbatore. I have participated in workshops like “Struds & ESRGSR” Organized by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), “Total Station & GPS” Organized by Hindustan college of Engineering & Technology, Coimbatore and “Green Technologies” Organized by “K.S.Rangasamy college of Technology, Namakkal”. Also I have published an article in Dhinamalar Newspaper in World Tamil Internet Conference.
An extremely distinguished faculty, a milieu replete with academic activity, and a graduate program which blends high quality course work and research facilities at the cutting edge of every sub-field are the factors which have motivated me to choose the National University of Singapore, Singapore for graduate studies. I believe the program offered will help me acquire the versatility needed to reach my full potential as an engineer.
After completion of a Master’s of Science degree, I would like to pursue a career with a consulting engineering firm, creating solutions for Offshore Technology problems and obtaining my Professional Engineer’s License. After gaining professional experience in the consulting world, I will have the skills I believe essential to return to school to further my education with a Doctoral degree and possibly remain in the academic field conducting research and instructing future civil engineers.
It would, therefore, be a privilege to be able to secure admission to pursue graduate studies, with adequate financial assistance at the National University of Singapore, Singapore. I am confident that I will match the high standards set by your university.
