Is it a correct sentence : after finishing my first task I had to move onto my next task.

"After finishing my first task, I had to move onto my next task." is a good sentence.

In North America we would write "move on to my next task". I think there would also be a very slight difference in pronunciation.

Yes, "on to" is better.
