In a way, it was good news. Though it wasn't good, there was something to be glad about.

2- It was one of those days when a person could reflect on the multiple millions of people crowded into Southern California and say, “I get it.”

Southern California is a huge sprawl of people. Some visitors are appalled. This was a day when the writer could appreciate that crowded environment.
