Hi, friends. Given the context, could you suggest another synonym for "exhibition"? The modern meanings of 'exhibition' seem to lack one that existed during the previous century. Here is the context:

"Upon exhibition of ether he revived and was rapidly restored to health, and to the society of his friends — from whom, however, all knowledge of his resuscitation was withheld, until a relapse was no longer to be apprehended." (http://poestories.com/read/premature)

As an aside, ether is used as a mild anesthetic.

How about administration? That seems to fit the spirit of the thing.

I have never known the administration of ether to revive anyone.

That is the point. Ether is used to make a patient insensitive and not to revive him.
I have looked into other editions of the story, but the sentence reads the same. :-?

However, as the previous paragraph suggests, the patient had to undergo a surgical operation to restore to health. I think that was the reason behind the administration of ether.
