    "immediate constituents"

    Dear teachers,

If you ask students to analyse a sentence, would there be any difference if you said :

    a) "Analyse this sentence into constituents", or
    b) "Analyse this sentence into IMMEDIATE constituents" ?

    Many thanks,
    Hela

I read some books about it before. I'm not sure if they're different but I would say they are similar ideas.

I think constituents very interesting. Hope that helps!

    Re: "immediate constituents"

Are "immediate constituents" the parts of speech and the "constituents" the sentence elements ?

Blacknomi, would it be possible to have a bit more of the article?

    Re: "immediate constituents"

There are two kinds of constituents, immediate and ultimate:

    immediate: subject + predicate
EX: [Max and I] [go to the store every day].

ultimate: what's inside the subject and the predicate
EX: [[Max] [and] [I]] [go [to [[the] store]] [everyday]]
